1. Due 4 September. One point for the most creative and interesting curve drawn with software, such as Mathematica's ParametricPlot command. Submit both a graphic file (pdf, jpg, pict, png) and the code used by e-mail.
   Congratulations to Jacob Schloss for the curve appearing in the lecture notes for 10 September
2. Due 4 September. One point for the most informative on-paragraph explanation expanding on material from the lectures connected with curves. This should be submitted to the T-Square archive with a copy to Prof. H.

  Reading:
  • As necessary, review basic vectors, for example reading SHE (Salas, Hille, and Etgen), Chapter 13.
  • SHE, Sections 14.1-14.2
  Exercises:
  • In the future, exercises will be assigned here to help you prepare for Thursday quizzes. On Tuesday, 19 August, we will begin a week of calculus and vector "boot camp" in recitation. You should come prepared to knock off the following sorts of calculations:
    1. Find the dot product of two vectors.
    2. Find the cross product of two vectors.
    3. Given one vector, find a second, nonzero vector that is perpendicular to it.
    4. Find the angle between two vectors.
    5. Find the projection of one vector onto another.
    6. Find the closest point on a line to a given point not on the line.
    7. Use vectors to find the area of a paralellogram.
    8. Use vectors to find the volume of a paralellopiped.
    9. Know the product, chain, and quotient rules of calculus and how to use them.
